JUNE 2015

08-06-2015 - Proposed Summer Trip to UK

No pictures in Gallery

This is a Proposal for your comments to Kaarina (kaarinaojasti(at)  The dates are NOT fixed.

Time: early June
Estimated length: 5-6 days
Flights: Ryanair from Tampere (Ryanair now flies on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays)
Cost: 600-700 €

In the summer of 2015 our plans are to visit the beautiful East Anglia, with Cambridge as our base. There are budget flights from Tampere to Stansted; the airport is situated 50 miles from the town.

The following attractions are planned:

  • Cambridge Botanical Gardens

  • A walk along the Backs and the river, ending up at the Anchor

  • The Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester

  • Anglesey Abbey (National Trust), and the Devil's Dyke. From there into the Fens, ending up at Wicken Fen (which is a re-created natural landscape, and so a kind of modern version of a landscape garden)

  • The Beth Chatto Gardens in North Essex, and the Suffolk villages on the way back - with tea in the Swan in Lavenham.

  • The Royal Horticultural Gardens at Hyde Hall near Chelmsford, Essex.-For stunning landscaped gardens (designed by Capability Brown): Stowe in Buckinghamshire.

The above sounds like a lot, but many of the attractions can be visited on the same day, and all the distances are fairly short (80 km might be the longest drive). There would be plenty of time for shopping - Cambridge is great for that, too!

FAT PIG by Neil LaBute

Performances on 17, 18, 19, 22, 23, 25 and 26 April at 7 pm and 19 April at 2 pm

at Puoli-Q Stage of Q-teatteri, Tunturikatu 16, Töölö, Helsinki

Tom is a nice guy. But he’s been dating the wrong girls. One day, at lunch, he randomly meets Helen, a librarian with a big heart and an even bigger… personality.

Does Tom have the balls to date someone who’s not exactly a Barbie doll? Does Tom have the balls to fall in love? And what do his work friends make of Helen? Carter is as shallow as they come, and Jeannie – well, let’s just say she might still think she and Tom are dating. Surely love will conquer all?

‘Fat Pig’ is a dark comedy about modern dating, relationships and our obsession with how we look and what others think of us. In the age of the selfie, do we know how to love anymore - especially ourselves?

Directed by Stina Halmetoja, produced by Stina Halmetoja and Zoë Chandler.

Featuring Austin Sears, Pauliina Munukka, James Duah and Mari Kortemaa.

If still available, tickets can be purchased on the door at full price and with CASH ONLY.

Donald Adamson's translations of Eeva Kilpis's poems.

On 17 April at 3 p.m. the British Embassy in Helsinki will host a launch of Donald Adamsons translations of Eeva Kilpis poems ('A Landscape Blossoms Within Me', published as a bilingual edition by Arc Publications, UK). The event will be held in the Embassy residence. It is envisaged that the poems will be read by several voices American, English, Irish, Scots and that some will be read as dialogues. Afternoon tea will be available.
The Ambassador has mentioned that she would like to see Finnish-British members there. If you would like to attend, could you send an email to, or to Numbers are limited to 80, so in the first instance we would ask board members to indicate their interest. So long as the event is not over-subscribed, Donald Adamson will send you an email with a formal invitation. For reasons of security, a couple of weeks before the launch the Embassy will need a list of persons attending, with emails, home addresses, and positions.

It would be helpful if you could indicate soon if you are interested in attending.

Many thanks
